Christmas in the Making

Covent Garden has switched things up for it's world famous Christmas installation. Learn more about how the iconic Christmas Bells were made and hard work from the team behind them...

November 2023, Covent Garden unveiled its brand-new decorative Christmas scheme for the first time in nearly a decade, featuring over 40 gigantic bells with red bows, 12 giant baubles and 8 spinning mirror balls. Over 140,000 lights illuminate the Piazza, Seven Dials and the estate's surrounding streets, showcasing the spirit of Christmas throughout the festive season.

Teams worked through the night to install the world-famous decorations, transported from the London based studios.

A team of 70 people spent 18 months creating these unique pieces in a London based studio, all in time to dazzle us for Christmas 2023. With the bells each weighing almost five tonnes and sparkling with 275 kilos glitter and gold leaf equivalent to 29 miles if laid out side by side, the creation process was a mammoth task.

The Covent Garden Christmas Tree

Central to the lights is London's biggest hand-picked Christmas tree, standing at 60ft tall.

The tree itself is carefully selected from a UK based Christmas Tree farm in the midlands with the centrepiece to Christmas adorned with 30,000 LED lights and over 200 giant baubles. To bring the magic to life the project takes place through the night and requires a team of 60 skilled workers plus a cherry-picker for the higher branches.
